Spring at the Big Berry

Spring is a picturesque time on the farm, with the lovely pastels of bud burst and young green foliage.

Hundreds of bees from 30 hives, busily work at pollination, whilst the ride on mower roars past, keeping the spring grass at bay.

Preparations are gearing up for the coming harvest season. General farm work and administration needs are finalised.

the Big Berry - Winter

Fertilization, irrigation and weed control programs are ongoing through the winter months.

The huge job of pruning approximately 20,000 blueberry bushes is the major challenge for full-time staff.

Young blueberries are planted as replants and new blocks are established. Blueberries are best grown with 700 chill hours for optimal fruit production!

Following an intense harvest season, we relax into house keeping tasks.

Blackberries which have been pruned and thinned out in late summer, are tied up and begin to lose their leaves. Old raspberry canes are cut out and younger canes are trellised neatly.

Soil and leaf analyses are carried out so that nutrients can be adjusted to promote healthy plant growth.

Raspberrys on bush at the Big Berry

The hectic harvest season begins in mid November with blackberries ripening and raspberries following in quick succession, peaking in mid December.

With blueberries also starting in early December, life gets very busy for 80+ seasonal pickers and packers.

Everybody is focussed on delivering quality product, sales and customer service.
